  • INFO SESSION- How to Choose A Pediatrician?

On 19 July, 2022 HHFC and Tribeca Pediatrics came together to host an info session to explain the ways to find the pediatrician a family needs. Click to Tweet! Having the right pediatrician is very important! Whether you are a new or experienced parent, having a pediatrician that you know and trust is incredibly valuable as you welcome a baby to your family. The pediatrician you will select will not only be an important medical advisor who knows your family well but also understands various stages of your child's development. Pediatricians understand that children are not simply small adults. Children often present different symptoms from adults. Therefore they may need different prescriptions or treatments than adults. Pediatricians are specially trained to recognize the importance of these differences. How to Choose A Pediatrician? Your child should not only see the pediatrician for an illness. It is also important to schedule well-child-care exams regularly, beginning in infancy. For this reason there are 3 things to consider when choosing a pediatrician. Considering the location of the doctor’s office. Checking out doctor’s credentials and experience. Getting pediatrician recommendations from family, close friends and relevant institutions. • The Benefits of Breastfeeding for Mothers and Babies

Breast Milk is Liquid Gold For the first months of life a baby can receive all needed nutrients and energy from the Breast Milk. WHO and UNICEF recommend that children initiate breastfeeding within the first hours of birth and be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life. Depending on the researches, breastfed children perform better on intelligence tests, are less likely to be overweight or obese and less prone to diabetes later in life. Breastfeeding also plays a significant role in mothers’ lives. Mothers who breastfeed have reduced risk of breast or ovarian cancers and can recover faster after delivery. HHFC serves to strengthen families through education & empowerment. Hope and Healing Family Center always believe in the importance of breastfeeding in the development of children. We are always happy to provide the families with available resources. In recognition of this week we would like to remind you that HHFC is home to Brownsville's first and only Breastmilk Depot. • Public Hearing on Perinatal Care, Maternal Morbidity & Mortality

Photo credit: https://www.harvardpilgrim.org On November 30, 2021, the Assembly Standing Committee on Health and the Assembly Task Force on Women's issues hosted a public hearing to discuss the importance of perinatal care, maternal morbidity and mortality. The hearing called attention to both the quality and accessibility of these issues as it relates to motherhood. Throughtout the course of the hearing, quality of healthcare in relation to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum have been shown to have great importance. The discussion brought a focus to how barriers with general understanding as well as accessibility may pose a issue amongst families. To provide more insight it's important to understand the general terminology surrounding the topic at hand. Key Terms Perinatal Care: is the care mother's recieve before and after birth relating to increasing pregnancy outcomes and decreasing maternal mortality. Maternal Morbidity: short or long term medical issues that occur due to pregnancy and/or childbirth. Maternal Mortality: is the death of a mother due to complications during pregnancy or childbirth. With an understanding of these terms, hosting public hearings such as this one call attention to complications surrounding pregnancy that is not otherwise spoken about. While sticking to talking points surrounding these issues, the hearing also examined causes and extensive consequences amongst motherhood and pregnancy. In efforts to move forward and provide solutions, its important to keep this dialogue open throughout communities. In correlation to Hope and Healing Family Center, the organization hopes to host and open further conversations centered around educating families!
